Ellen was born in 1873 in Winteringham.1   Ellen's father was David Frow and her mother was Dorcas Frow.  Her maternal grandparents were John Frow and Ann Towl. She had five brothers and three sisters, named David, Henry, Mark, George, Frederick, Mary, Emma and Harriet.  She was the youngest of the nine children. She had two half-brothers named John and James.
