Elizabeth, known as Bessie, was born in December 1888 in Sholing, Hampshire.1   Bessie's father was Charles Haymer and her mother was Sarah Callun.  Her paternal grandparents were James Haymer and Lucy. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Charles, William, Edward, Arthur, Frederick, Florence, Alice, Nellie and Edith.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children. She had five half-sisters named Alice, Mary, Agnes, Kate and Phoebe.
