Edith was born in March 1898 in Sholing, Hampshire.1   Edith's father was Charles Haymer and her mother was Sarah Callun.  Her paternal grandparents were James Haymer and Lucy. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Charles, William, Edward, Arthur, Frederick, Florence, Alice, Bessie and Nellie.  She was the second youngest of the ten children. She had five half-sisters named Alice, Mary, Agnes, Kate and Phoebe.
