Sarah was born in 1717 in Newton Toney, Wiltshire and her christening took place there on January 16th, 1717.1   Sarah's father was Joseph Girle and her mother was Sarah Reed.  Her paternal grandparents were John Girle and Joane Grace. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Edward, Hannah, Rachel, Susannah and Jane.  She was the oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named William.
