Joseph was born in 1723 in Newton Toney, Wiltshire and his christening took place there on November 1st, 1723.1 2   Joseph's father was Joseph Girle and his mother was Sarah Reed.  His paternal grandparents were John Girle and Joane Grace. He had a brother and five sisters, named Edward, Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Susannah and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named William.
