Rachel was born in 1831 in Winterbourne Dauntsey,Wiltshire and her christening took place there on November 6th, 1831.1 2   Rachel's father was Thomas Dear and her mother was Harriet Cannings.  Her paternal grandparents were William Dear and Jane Parrick; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Cannings and Sarah Brown. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Charles, Henry, Thomas, George, John, Isaac, Jane, Sarah, Mary, Hannah and Eliza.  She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.  She died at the age of 35 in March 1866.3
