William was born in 1784 in Ford, Laverstock, Wiltshire and his baptism took place on August 29th, 1784 in Laverstock, Wiltshire.1   William's father was Thomas Cannings and his mother was Ann Austence.  His maternal grandparents were Daniel Austence and Martha Amer. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, Daniel, Ann and Betty.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
