James was born in 1768 in Ford, Laverstock, Wiltshire and his baptism took place on November 7th, 1768 in Laverstock, Wiltshire.1   James' father was Thomas Cannings and his mother was Ann Austence.  His maternal grandparents were Daniel Austence and Martha Amer. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Daniel, William, Ann and Betty.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
