Betty was born in 1786 in Ford, Laverstock, Wiltshire and her baptism took place on November 5th, 1786 in Laverstock, Wiltshire.1   Betty's father was Thomas Cannings and her mother was Ann Austence.  Her maternal grandparents were Daniel Austence and Martha Amer. She had four brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas, Daniel, William and Ann.  She was the youngest of the six children.
