Richard was born in 1876 in Cowpen Quay Northumberland England.  Richard's father was Mathew Comb and his mother was Jane Scott.  His paternal grandparents were Mathew Comb and Mary Crombie; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Scott and Jane Alexander. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Mathew, James, Alexander, Jane, Mary, Ann and Agnes.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 60 in September 1936 in Sunderland Reg Dist Co Durham England.
