Jane's father was Mathew Comb and her mother was Jane Scott. Her paternal grandparents were Mathew Comb and Mary Crombie; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Scott and Jane Alexander. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Mathew, Richard, James, Alexander, Mary, Ann and Agnes. She was the oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 8 in 1881.
