Mathew was born in 1853 in Dunbar East Lothian Scotland.  Mathew's father was Mathew Comb and his mother was Mary Crombie.  His paternal grandparents were James Comb and Anne Marr; his maternal grandparents were Richard Crombie and Margaret Hume. He had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Richard, William, Margaret, Mary, Agnes, Elizabeth and Jeanie.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 61 in 1914 in Tynemouth Reg Dist Northumberland England.
