James was born in 1835 in Dunbar East Lothian Scotland.  James' father was Mathew Comb and his mother was Mary Crombie.  His paternal grandparents were James Comb and Anne Marr; his maternal grandparents were Richard Crombie and Margaret Hume. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Richard, William, Mathew, Margaret, Mary, Agnes, Elizabeth and Jeanie.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 66 on July 7th, 1901 in Blyth Northumberland England.
