Peter's father was James McMurran and his mother was Agnes Lochart Savage.  His paternal grandparents were John McMurran and Agnes Robertson. He had five half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named John, James, David, Hugh, James, Maryanne, Agnes, Allison, Susan, Elizabeth, Margaret and Agnes.  He died in 1855 in Ayr.¹
