James' father was James McMurran and his mother was Marion Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were John McMurran and Agnes Robertson. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Maryanne, Agnes and Allison.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Peter.
