David's father was William Bone and his mother was Agnes Lochart Savage.  His paternal grandparents were David Bone and Susan Hammond. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Hugh, James, Susan, Elizabeth and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Peter and Agnes.
