Margaret's father was William Bone and her mother was Agnes Lochart Savage.  Her paternal grandparents were David Bone and Susan Hammond. She had three brothers and two sisters, named David, Hugh, James, Susan and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the six children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Peter and Agnes.
