John's father was William McMurran and his mother was Annie Mcintosh.  His paternal grandparents were John McMurran and Agnes Robertson. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named James, William, George, Jonathan, Thomas, Hugh, Adam, McMurran, Alison, Jennie and Marion.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 34 in 1906 in Kilmarnock.
