Thomas' father was Henry Keegens and his mother was Elizabeth McSephany. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Hugh, William, Henry, George, Richard, Richard, Agnes and Mary. He was the third youngest of the nine children. He died in 1898 in New Cumnock.
