Richard's father was Henry Keegens and his mother was Elizabeth McSephany. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Hugh, William, Henry, George, Thomas, Richard, Agnes and Mary. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 5 in 1897 in New Cumnock.
