Mary's father was Henry Keegens and her mother was Elizabeth McSephany. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Hugh, William, Henry, George, Richard, Thomas, Richard and Agnes. She was the second youngest of the nine children. She died at the age of 77 in 1976 in Muirkirk.
