George's father was Henry Keegens and his mother was Elizabeth McSephany. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Hugh, William, Henry, Richard, Thomas, Richard, Agnes and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 58 in 1948 in New Cumnock.
