Elisabeth was born in 1827 in Ayrshire.1   Elisabeth's father was James Aitken and her mother was Janet Aird.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Aird and Helen Crawford. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, John, Matthew, Lawrence, Nancy, Ellennora and Janet.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
