Richard was born about 1762.  Richard's father was Richard Tankersley and his mother was Mary Thornley.  His paternal grandparents were George Tankersley and Mary Longley Long. He had four brothers and a sister, named George, John, Reuben, Peter and Mary Ann Polly.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
