John was born about 1760 in Port Royal, Caroline Co. VA.  John's father was Richard Tankersley and his mother was Mary Thornley.  His paternal grandparents were George Tankersley and Mary Longley Long. He had four brothers and a sister, named George, Richard, Reuben, Peter and Mary Ann Polly.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died on March 14th, 1840.
