Richard was born about 1736.  Richard's father was George Tankersley and his mother was Mary Longley Long.  His paternal grandparents were Reuben Tankersley and Sarah Ann Beverley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Reuben, George, John, Dorcas, Mary and Sarah.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  He died in 1773.
