John was born about 1740.  John's father was George Tankersley and his mother was Mary Longley Long.  His paternal grandparents were Reuben Tankersley and Sarah Ann Beverley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Reuben, George, Richard, Dorcas, Mary and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died about 1798.
