John was born on April 4th, 1798.  John's father was Capt Samuel Rankin and his mother was Jane McConahey.  His paternal grandparents were William Rankin and Abagail Tassie (Native American???). He had six brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Stephen, William, David, Matthew, James, Matilda, Abigail and Jane.  He died at the age of 68 in April 1866 in Mt. Prospect, Washington, Pennsylvania.
