William was born in 1720 in Ireland.  William's father was David Rankin Sr and his mother was Jennet McCormick. He had two brothers and a sister, named Hugh, David and Barbara.  He died at the age of 73 in 1793 in Mt. Pleasant, Washington, Pennsylvania.
