William was born on July 27th, 1788.  William's father was Alexander McCracken and his mother was Margaret possibly Marshall.  His maternal grandparents were Capt Henry Marshall and Mattie possibly Chambers. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Henry, Robert Marshall, James, Alexander, Henry, John Murry, Arthur, Mary Polly, Sarah, Lillie, Martha, Margaret and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 84 in 1872.
