His paternal grandparents were John David Shaver and Nancy Tanner; his maternal grandparents were Martin Kiser and Mary Ferrell. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Isiah Elias, Essaias, Ulysses Samuel, Ezekial, H. Martin, Paul, Pharoah E., Sarah Catherine Jane, Viola Ollie and Cellia J.. He was the third youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 70 on February 16th, 1959 in Roane County or Spencer, Roane County, Virginia. He was buried in Rocky Branch Cemetery, Johnson Creek, Roane County, Virginia.-
