Viola Ollie was born in May 1883 in Roane County, West Virginia. Viola Ollie's father was Samuel L. Shaver and her mother was Sarah Jane Kiser. Her paternal grandparents were John David Shaver and Nancy Tanner; her maternal grandparents were Martin Kiser and Mary Ferrell. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named Isiah Elias, Essaias, Ulysses Samuel, Ezekial, H. Martin, Isaiah W., Paul, Pharoah E., Sarah Catherine Jane and Cellia J..
