Rebecca was born on January 4th, 1813 in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Rebecca's father was Johan Philip Knappenberger and her mother was Maria Barbara Stettler. Her paternal grandparents were Johan Henrich Knappenberger and Anna Margaretha Desch; her maternal grandparents were Henry Stettler and Barbara Steininger. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Jonathan, John Philip, Henry, Jacob, Solomon, Lydia, Anna Maria, Judith K., Salome and Tevilla. She is the third youngest of the eleven children.
