John F. was born about 1851 in Monroe County, Indiana.  John F.'s father was John Shields and his mother was Eliza Jane Blakely.  His paternal grandparents were William L., Sr. Shields and Nancy Elizabeth Nash; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Blakely and Elizabeth McFall. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas Jefferson, Frank P., Mary E., Rebecca M., Eliza J., Anna, Susannah, Elizabeth and Catherine "Katie".  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
