Dorotha was born on December 20th, 1921 in Polk Twp, Monroe Co., Indiana. Dorotha's father was Leander Lee Deckard and her mother was Lavesta Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Deckard and Mary Polly Ann Kinser; her maternal grandparents were David Smith and Rebecca Sexton. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Hebert, Roy Luke Rufford, Elza Ed, Clovis Bean, Glenn, Floyd, Carl Edward, Dorothy, Mary Ann and Margaret Louise. She was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.-
