Clovis Bean Deckard 
Clovis Bean was born on April 9th, 1920 in Monroe Co., Indiana. Clovis Bean's father was Leander Lee Deckard and his mother was Lavesta Smith. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Deckard and Mary Polly Ann Kinser; his maternal grandparents were David Smith and Rebecca Sexton. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Hebert, Roy Luke Rufford, Elza Ed, Glenn, Floyd, Carl Edward, Dorothy, Dorotha, Mary Ann and Margaret Louise. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 80 on September 12th, 2000 in Lawrence Co., Indiana. He was buried in Spice Valley Cemetery, Mitchell, Indiana.General Notes
Clovis Bean Deckard was a wonderful man. The story goes that he got his
nickname when he was a little boy by sticking dry beans up his nose.
They couldn't get them out and had to take him to a doctor to have them
removed. From then on he was "Bean". One of the funnies stories he told
was when there was a rumor that a bear was loose in the Mitchell In.
area. Bean had put his garbage out in a large black bag and forgot about
it. In the night he heard a noise. Thinking something was around the
house he got his gun and went to investigate. It was a very dark night
and when he got outside he could barely make out a large black object.
Thinking the story might be true about the bear he raised his gun and
shot his garbage.
He was very interested in his church and he and his wife sang with the
church group. They were asked many times to visit other churches and
sang. They always tried to oblige. His wife played the piano and Bean
played the fiddle. He loved music. He was making a violin and at a family
get together was showing it off proudly. When his great-Neice got married
in an old church all there was to play was a pump organ. His wife
managed very well and Bean brought along his fiddle and played with her.
Everyone loved the music . Bean didn't know it but sitting in the
congregation was a violist from Indiana University, a violinist from the
Chicago Symphony, and a professional pianist. They all thought Bean was
great.
With six daughters Bean got a lot of experience with weddings. When
his youngest got married Bean was of course giving her away. After he
gave her away he realized he couldn't get to the seat beside his wife
because of the long train on the dress. He didn't want to step on it and
he didn't want to go back and walk around it. So he gave a graceful leap
and jumped over it. Everyone was trying not to laugh but Beans face was
one of relief on making it across without any mishap.
He was a I.U. basketball fan. He loved watching the games and one of
the highlights of a trip he took to I.U. was meeting Bobby Knight. Knight
responded to Bean like all people and gave him an I.U. sweater and all
sorts of gifts. It was a big highlight for Bean. He told everyone of the
experience. And displayed his objects around his house. He didn't know
how it turned out with Knight but he would have been disappointed.
Bean was a person who could light up a room. He brought life and
happiness to the people who knew him. He would be telling the most
ordinary story and everyone around would be smiling.
He and his wife Pearl had over fifty years together. They were the
kind of couple whom God joined together and they stayed together.
He loved people and they loved him back. You could count yourself very
lucky if you knew him.
