His paternal grandparents were Abraham Thomas and Mary Evans; his maternal grandparents were William Heald Simmons and Josephine Pettit. He had eight brothers and two sisters, named Robert Abraham, Melvin William, Clifford James, Roy George, Ralph Edward, Allen Joseph, Glenn Frederick, Richard John, Marianne Harriet and Elizabeth Marie.
