Samuel's father was Thomas Woodworth (Woodward) and his mother was Hannah Kemp.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Woodworth and Alice Dobb. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, James, Thomas, Hannah, Jane and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 73 on January 3rd, 1887.²

  Samuel Woodward (aka Woodworth) was born in Childer Thornton in 1813, before the family moved to Gayton, Heswall.
  
  31 Dec 1839, Samuel Woodward a Farmer from Gayton son of Thomas, a Farmer married Martha Taylor from Neston, daughter of James Tatlor at Heswall St Peter
  
  In 1841, Samule and Martha (both 25) and baby son Joseph (8 mo) were living at Gayton with his mother Hannah (45, Shop Keeper).
