Joseph was born in March 1879 in Neston and his baptism took place there on March 8th, 1879.1 2  Joseph's father was John Woodward and his mother was Ellen Conway.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Woodward and Maria Wynne. He had five brothers and a sister, named Herbert, Alfred, Albert, Fred, Arthur and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at 11 months old on February 28th, 1880 in Neston.3
