Herbert was born in March 1874 in Neston and his baptism took place there on March 13th, 1874.1 2  Herbert's father was John Woodward and his mother was Ellen Conway.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Woodward and Maria Wynne. He had five brothers and a sister, named Alfred, Joseph, Albert, Fred, Arthur and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 73 on April 26th, 1947 in British Columbia.3

‌Herbert and Annie were married in a religious ceremony on August 5th, 1901 in Toxteth Park.6   They had two sons named John and Wilfred.
