John's father was Joseph Woodward and his mother was Maria Wynne. His paternal grandparents were James Woodward and Ann Williams. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Joseph, George, Annie, Lucy, Margaret and Maria. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 86 on November 25th, 1935 in Neston.²
