William's father was Joseph Woodward and his mother was Maria Wynne. His paternal grandparents were James Woodward and Ann Williams. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Joseph, George, Annie, Lucy, Margaret and Maria. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 77 in September 1931 in Birkenhead.²
