Wilfred was born in 1893 in Royton.1  Wilfred's father was James Winterbottom and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Navin. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Fred, Frank, Mary, Frances, Clara, Alma and Rosie.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
