Frances was born in 1890 in Royton.1  Frances' father was James Winterbottom and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Navin. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Wilfred, Thomas, Fred, Frank, Mary, Clara, Alma and Rosie.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
