Thomas was born in 1897 in Oldham.1  Thomas' father was James Winterbottom and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Navin. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Wilfred, Fred, Frank, Mary, Frances, Clara, Alma and Rosie.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
