Fred was born in 1899 in Oldham.1  Fred's father was James Winterbottom and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Navin. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Wilfred, Thomas, Frank, Mary, Frances, Clara, Alma and Rosie.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.  He died in 1899 in Oldham.1
