Alma was born in December 1900 in Oldham.1  Alma's father was James Winterbottom and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Navin. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Wilfred, Thomas, Fred, Frank, Mary, Frances, Clara and Rosie.  She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
