Elizabeth was born in November 1840 in Bolton and her baptism took place on January 17th, 1841 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Elizabeth's father was Walter Welsby and her mother was Maria Bolton.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Bolton and Mary Whitaker. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Josiah, Thomas, Mary, Ann and Ann.  She was the oldest of the six children.
