Ann was born in September 1874 in Bolton. Ann's father was Robert Thornley and her mother was Elizabeth Welsby.  Her maternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. She had five sisters named Mary, Elizabeth, Emma, Ada and Maggie.  She was the fourth oldest of the six children.  She died in 1874.
