Margaret, known as Maggie, was born in June 1879 in Bolton. Maggie's father was Robert Thornley and her mother was Elizabeth Welsby.  Her maternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. She had five sisters named Mary, Elizabeth, Emma, Ann and Ada.  She was the youngest of the six children.
